When to See Your Doctor

You should see you doctor if you notice any of the common signs and symptoms of enlarged or chronically infected tonsils and adenoids.

Common signs and symptoms of enlarged tonsils or adenoids causing obstruction

  • Snoring
  • Loud and/or labored breathing
  • Mouth breathing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Prolonged chewing
  • "Nasal voice"
  • Frequent or disruptive gasping or snorting noises
  • Restless sleep and/or nighttime awakening
  • Bedwetting
Common signs and symptoms of acute tonsillitis

  • Fever
  • Sudden sore throat
  • Redness and swelling of the tonsils
  • Yellowish or white spots on tonsils
  • Tenderness in the neck below the jaw
Common signs and symptoms of chronic tonsillitis

  • Low-grade, long-term throat pain
  • Pock marked cryptic tonsils
  • Swollen lymph glands below the jaw
  • Bad breath
  • Collection of debris on or within tonsils (tonsil stones)
